Celebrating Dia De Muertos in COVID Times
On 1st and 2nd November 2021, people in Valle de Chalco, Mexico, celebrated Dia De Muertos (Day of the Dead). Traditional ceremonies for Dia De Muertos were allowed to resume, following the relaxation of covid restrictions in Mexico City. It was a joyful return of celebrations, as well as, an important time to grieve and remember, especially, for many people who lost loved ones due to the pandemic.
For the celebration, the Xico team decorated their bicycles with giant cardboard skulls and traditional followers. At night, dressed-up Xico staff also paraded with the decorated bicycles and displayed them to the neighbourhood. Participants were wearing masks and keeping social distance.
In addition, Xico team also carried out an online photo contest “Ofrendas y Disfraces de Catrinas”. By sharing photos of their “Catrina” costume or home altars, participants from the neighbourhood received gifts prepared by Xico.
