COVID relief for families in leprosy colonies in Tamil Nadu, India

Leprosy colonies in India, which have already been marginalised, are experiencing the devastating impact of COVID. People in the colonies are struggling to feed their children and families due to losing their livelihoods.

In November 2021, severe floods hit Tamil Nadu. Families in leprosy colonies were overwhelmed by the combined impact of COVID and the floods.

In response to the crisis, KONE Centennial Foundation, in partnership with KONE India, supported the emergency relief initiated by Rising Star Outreach India (RSOI, a nonprofit organisation, supporting individuals and families affected by leprosy in India).

From 26th to 29th November 2021, the Rising Star team and volunteers distributed emergency relief packages to 454 families in 11 leprosy colonies across Tamil Nadu timely and efficiently. The dry rations and hygiene supplies included in the packages can help families cope with the difficult time.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, KCF’s response has been focused on supporting covid relief programs initiated by community-based nonprofit organisations. In 2021, KCF’s COVID relief donations have reached over 2,141 families in marginalised communities quickly and efficiently in Mexico, India, South Africa and Thailand.
